Reception – Maths

Reception Baseline Assessment

The Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA) is a short, interactive and practical assessment of your child’s early literacy, communication, language and mathematics skills when they begin school, using materials that most children of your child’s age will be familiar with. It is statutory for all schools from September 2021.

The RBA is not about judging or labelling your child or putting them under any
pressure. Your child cannot ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ the assessment. Its main purpose is to create a starting point to measure the progress schools make with their pupils.

Maths within Early Years

In Early Years, pupils will follow the Reception White Rose Maths scheme of learning through both practical and written application in order to achieve the matsh Early Learning Goals. Taking part in short, sharp inputs, pupils will then have the opportunity to apply thier understanding of maths in the different areas of provision that have been designed to promote the pupils use of maths. It is through this practical and real life application of maths that the children begin to develop the importance of maths and how it relates to the real world.
