What a fun week we have had in Reception!

In Phonics we have been looking at the graphemes ‘x’, ‘y’, ‘z’ and ‘zz’ and the sounds that they make. We practised reading different words and identifying if they were real or made up, 0rdered letters to write our own words and then took up the challenge of creating a sentence. Whilst looking at the ‘y’ sound, we took the opportunity to taste test a selection of different foods and record if we thought they were ‘yum’ or ‘yuck’!

In maths we have been learning about weight and capacity. Outside, we used vocabulary such as; full, empty, half full and nearly empty, to describe and sort different cups of water and some children also used this language to describe how many children were on the climbing frame! Inside, we compared the mass of different objects, both by using scales and by holding objects in our hands.

On Wednesday we had a Reading Buddy Class Swap. In the afternoon we paired up with a class in LKS2 and had time to read our books to the older children as well as listen to them read to us. Both classes really enjoyed the time and are excited to hear who we will match up with next!

On Thursday we had forest schools. In the classroom we began the day discussing how the Earth is divided into two hemispheres by the equator, finding these on a globe, on the class wall map and Google Earth. We talked about how the weather and seasons would be different on the other side of the world. After exploring the field and sharing what we observed, we then drew pictures to compare January in England with January in the southern hemisphere. As part of our animals topic, we talked about how to care for our school pets and the children had a great time visiting, petting and feeding the rabbits and Guinea pigs.  Our final forest school activity was to use loose parts to create our own pictures of animals. Can you guess what they are?

Elsewhere in the classroom the children have enjoyed roleplaying in our vets practise and pet shop, reading stories on the iPads and playing puzzle games.

We hope you have a super weekend!
