EYFS – Newsletter – 24.03.23

It’s been a lovely start to the new half term, with lots of happy faces coming back with stories to share. Our latest topic is ‘Location, Location, Location’ and will see us learning all about our local area and how it is similar and different from other locations around the world.

Our topic has already seen children happily discussing the area they live in, and pointing out places they know on our large Cookridge map. We spent some time looking at the local fire station on Google Maps and then learning about what firefighters do and how they train to help people in our community. Later in the term, we shall be taking the children out for a local walk to look at the fire station and other local places of interest. Friday’s unexpected fire alarm evacuation and visit from a real-life fire engine was an added bonus!

As a contrast to looking at Cookridge, we also took a look at the ancient pyramids found in Egypt and found these on our world map. The children then took part in a shared guided drawing session to produce their own brilliant pictures of the pyramids.

In his week’s D.T. time, the children enjoyed an exciting pancake-themed session to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Everyone discussed what makes up a healthy diet, before designing their own pancake topping creation – and then got to build and make their own pancake!

Phonics this week has seen the children introduced to the digraphs ‘ar’ ‘or’ and ‘ur’. The children took part in sessions to practice and apply these phonemes in their reading and writing. One particular activity needed children to throw beanbags to particular ‘ur’ words to win pictures for their team’s purse. We certainly know how to have fun in Reception.

In Maths, the children have been concentrating on the numbers 9 and 10 this week. There have been games involving counting, constructing and subitising these numbers that have helped the children to be more confident in using these numbers in the future.

NEXT WEEK:

Monday 27th February (and Monday 6th March) – Parent consultations with Miss Rushworth and Mr Kerr – appointments can be booked on the school app or website if you have not already done so.

Thursday 2nd of March is World Book Day and as such we shall not be doing  our regular Forest School session. The whole school is joining in a special day of activities themed around books. Pupils and staff are encouraged to come to school dressed as a favourite book character of their choice (though we do have plenty of spare costumes in school, so please don’t feel obliged to buy or make a costume!).

We hope you all enjoy a lovely weekend!

The Reception Team.
