KS1 – Newsletter – 16.7.21

It’s been a whole week of fun in Key stage one and we hope that the children have really enjoyed themselves.

We have had two fabulous, off time table days, starting with the Big Swing on Tuesday and a culmination of our seaside topic with the Beach day on Thursday. The children have an amazing time exploring all the different activities on both days. They tried new things from riding on donkeys to building resilience and battling fear to brave the big jump. We have had an e mail from the ladies from ‘Hope Pastures’ who brought the Shetland ponies which said “Just to say what a pleasure it was for us (Sago, Freddie, Kira, Paula and I) to visit the KS1 classes yesterday.  The children were so well behaved, polite and an absolute credit to the school.” Hope pastures have their Summer Fair on Saturday. Have a look at the flyer for more information and if you go, tell them you are from Cookridge!

We have used these experiences in both year one and two for our writing in English. Year one have been writing recounts, focusing on joining two sentences about what they did using the conjunction ‘and’. Class 1 also wrote letters to the England team to encourage them after representing us in the football finals last Sunday! Year two have been focusing on writing in the past tense and using the correct regular and irregular past tense verbs.

In Maths Year two have been learning about data handling. They have learned how to make tally charts and pictograms and also how to read information from these charts and graphs. In class 1 they have been practising their doubling skills and class 2 have continued to find fractions of amounts and quantities.

In Geography, we have been looking at map skills and using a key. We plotted the layout from the big swing, thinking where each of the activities were and then created symbols for each of them that could be used on a key

Year two have been finishing their PSHE topic looking at feelings. We have been thinking about how we feel in different situations and whether these are good or bad feelings. We also thought about how feelings can grow and change and how we can manage ‘big’ feelings.

Next week we have Sports Day on Monday. Unfortunately, due to the current circumstances, parents will be unable to attend this year. However, we will still be making it great fun for the children with lots of different races and sporting activities. Please ensure that your child attends school in their PE kit and with suitable trainers, not school shoes, that they will be able to run in on the grass.

During next week, your child will find out about their new class for next year, who their teacher will be and will have an opportunity to meet them.

We’re only putting on a few photos from this week as the photos from the Big Swing and Beach day have already been posted.
