KS1 – Newsletter – 30.9.22

Thank you to all those who attended our phonics work shop this week. We hope you found it helpful to understand how we teach phonics and some of the fun activities we use to help the children. If you have any further questions, please don’t be afraid to ask!

In English we have been continuing with our work on ‘Funny Bones’ and practising our handwriting. We made our own skeleton pictures using art straws and discussing which bones the skeletons had eg spine, ribs etc…Then children planned out and wrote their own Funny Bones story. They thought about the setting, what the skeletons were doing, a problem that happened and a resolution for the problem.

We have continued our work on place value in Year 2 Maths. We have been looking at partitioning numbers using part part whole models and writing numbers that have partitioned in this way. Year 1 have continued to focus on numbers being represented in different ways. They have been recognising numbers that are bigger and smaller.

We were learning a new skill in History this week. The children learnt the phrase ‘chronological order’ and about what a time line is. They then worked in groups, to put lots of events from the 21st Century onto the time line, using their place value knowledge to order the dates.

In RE this week, Year One began to learn about Special books. They learnt that in the Christian faith people read The Bible and in the Islamic faith, people read the Qu’ran. Year two were focusing on the basics of the Christian faith. The fact Christians believe in a Trinitarian God, that Jesus was God’s son and learning about different parts of the Bible.

In Art, the children have been learning about Pablo Picasso. They looked at some of his art work and discussed his style. They then began to create art work of their own, inspired by Picasso, drawing animals.

In DT,half the children were talking about how candles are made. They looked at what they are made from and what the wick is for. They then designed their own candles using different colours and patterns. The other half of the children were tasting different fruits. They were being taught how to hold a knife and how to keep their fingers safely out of the way.

Computing has been done through various lessons this week. We have all been learning how to log on to the ipads. We have learned about our own logins for Numbots and Lexia and have been using these programmes.

Reminder: If you have a photograph of your child (preferably 6 X4) doing something that they are really good at, please send them into school. We want to have them black and white and put in frames on a board in the classroom to celebrate who they are.
