LKS2 – Newsletter – 20.11.20

Another marvellous week has gone by in LKS2.

As part of our topic of Electricity, we have been learning about the components needed to make a complete circuit. The children discovered you need a power source (a cell), and wires connected at both ends to allow the electric charge to flow. They used this knowledge to build their very own circuits, to make a motor go round or a light bulb light up. They demonstrated fantastic team work, and worked carefully and skilfully with the equipment, whilst using scientific vocabulary to explain how their circuit was working. What a bunch of fantastic scientists!

We have recently started a new text in English and this week we read more of chapter 1 using our paired reading skills. After picking out various words we were unsure of, we focused on using our meaning breakdown strategies to help us understand what the words might mean. Using a dictionary, we uncovered each of the meanings. Focusing on the text, we discovered that a character had a dilemma. We used our background knowledge, understanding of our new words and our opinion corners to debate various answers to the question, ‘What would Kassie do next?’ For the remainder of the lesson, we acted out our own ideas on what we thought Kassie should do to solve her dilemma.

Miss Evans’ maths group have worked extremely hard on their column subtraction this week. We started the week using resources including base 10, counters, and place value charts to help our understanding of subtraction and exchange. Then we moved on to lots of different activities which required us to apply our skills and use written subtraction. The children’s focus and resilience has been very impressive – well done!

Miss Boyd’s maths group have aced learning column addition and subtraction so this week we have been deepening our understanding by solving various multi-step word problems. Our main task was to pick the suitable operation (addition or subtraction) that was needed to answer each step of the word problem and then use our fabulous knowledge of the column methods to get the final answer. Keep up the amazing work!

In this week’s French lesson, we moved on from learning numbers and have been looking at various foods. Our main task was to be able to answer in French whether a food was good for you or bad for you. We looked at many foods such as les succettes (lollipops), les fraises (strawberries), le chocolate (chocolate) and les poires (pears) and learnt to answer ‘c’est bon’ (it’s good) or ‘c’est mauvais’ (it’s bad).

In P.E. on Monday, we took part in a fun circuit training lesson and everyone loved it! We used lots of equipment and really pushed ourselves to keep going to each complete all of the activities in the time limit.

MESSAGES

The Youth Sport Trust have launched a Children’s after school club channel on YouTube. Children can go on to YouTube at 5pm every day, and take part in a 30minute active video delivered by different YST athlete mentors.
