UKS2 – Newsletter – 09.01.2022

It has been an action packed week in UKS2 this week.

On Monday,UKS2 braved the wind and rain and took to the garden to begin their project for the year. Using natural resources, the children will be designing, making and wearing their own Anglo-Saxon weapon belt. On monday, the children revisited their previous learning in Forest School, using bow saws to fashion the buckle of their belt. Afterwards, they shaped their buckle using whittling knives and potato peelers. The children displayed excellent recall of their Forest School skills, and are looking forward to their next session.

In french, the children learnt how to say “quarter past” and “quarter to” in French!

First, they recapped how to say “o’clock” and “half past” in French from LKS2. Then, they built on this vocabulary by learning how to say “quarter past” and “quarter to” and played a matching game in their table groups to practise their pronunication and to present sentences.

Finally, they read an authentic email outlining the details of a school trip for staff. They had to answer comprehension questions in their book.

This week in computing, UKS2 have been learning all about algorithms. After familiarising themselves with the language and process of troubleshooting, the children then designed their own mazes for their peers to complete.

This week in science, UKS2 have been learning about gravity! After learning about the discovery of gravity, and Sir Isaac Newton, the children were challenged with true or false statements. They were also taught the difference between mass and weight, and how the gravitational force on different celestial bodies impacts on this. Afterwards they went outside to investigate the effect of mass on gravity, using water balloons. After making their own predictions about the outcome of their investigation, the children thoroughly enjoyed disposing of their water balloon tools.
