UKS2 – Newsletter – 21.01.22

It has been an exciting week in UKS2.

On Tuesday, we investigated how light travels and how we see colours. Using torches, the children started generating their own investigative questions and hypotheses regarding light and we able to test these theories in class.

Firstly, the children used torches, mirrors and different objects to investigate whether light travels in straight lines or if it can bend around an object. Each group came to their own conclusion and used thought bubbles with sentences openers to prove their conclusion. We discussed our findings as a class and found that light travels in straight lines.

Secondly, the children were given the hypothesis: “Shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them.” Each group worked together to conduct their own experiment to prove or disprove this hypothesis. They had to consider how they would conduct a fair test, measure their results and ultimately write their own conclusion. They conducted their experiments and discussed their results – considering how the fact that light travels in straight lines explains the existence of shadows.

On Thursday, in Forest School, we went on a walk around the garden, playground and field at school to conduct research for our bird box project.

The children used information sheets to work in pairs and see if they could spot any birds on our walk. They also looked at the various bird boxes and reflected on their design, use of materials and placement.

Once back inside, the children started to sketch out the design of their bird box.

Also, the children were given the opportunity to complete a workshop with the illustrator of The Gruffalo, Axel Scheffler. It consisted of Axel sharing his miniature book collection and viewing some miniature treasures from the British Library. Then, the children were tasked with creating their own mini books! There were some fabulous examples produced, and we can’t wait to incorporate them into our own lessons later on in the term!

Finally, our learnatics this week were: Hussain and Olivia (Class 8), Fraya and Zvezdi  (Class 9) and Brandon and Esther (Class 10). Keep up the amazing hard work! Ooh Ahh You’re a star!!
