What a fantastic week it has been in UKS2!
This week, Miss Barnicoat’s maths class were on the field practising measuring and converting. After selecting objects to measure, the children were challenge to convert between centimetres, metres, millimetres and even kilometres! They use place value effectively and showed a good understanding of the metric system. Well done!
In English, Year 5 used their research to design and build models of the ancient city of Baghdad. This activity required the children to thoroughly research, visualise and explore the structure of the city, whilst paying specific attention to the architectural, structural and cultural influences of the ancient Islamic Empire.
This week, Year 5 had a fantastic session with a tennis coach during our PE lesson. The children learnt key skills to rally with their partner over the net, using an effective forehand or backhand hit.
Pupils in UKS2 revisited a skill they haven’t done in a while – knots and shelter building. To begin with, they revisited the two knots need to pitch a tent shelter – the Prusik and Bowline knots. After a bit of practice of both, children then got into teams to erect their shelter using the knots and skills needed. With the sun and heat today, children enjoyed relaxing in their shady spot before taking down their shelter in the opposite way to putting them up and tidied everything away to leave no trace that they were there – a very relevant topic given the recent wildfires which some have been started by discarded glass bottles and smouldering fires not properly extinguished by campers.
Don’t forget: for our next ‘Challenge of Champions’ competition, we will be looking at the artist Russell Wilson. The aim of the next ‘Challenge of Champions’ competition is to recreate an image based from his current exhibition. All entries must be returned to school by Friday 9th May and be drawn onto one piece of A4 paper. Remember, the winners of this competition will be awarded 50 team points, which means they will attend our school reward trip, as well as being entered into the overall ‘Challenge of Champions’ finalist competition.
We hope you have a fantastic Bank Holiday weekend. We look forward to seeing everyone, in normal school uniform, on Tuesday (6th).
