KS1 – Newsletter – 16.5.25

Thank you to all those Year One parents who attended the phonics workshop this week. We hope that you found it helpful. If you have any questions about the screening (or anything else!) please come and speak to a member of the team.

We have been reading lots of traditional tales in English and thinking about what features they always contain. The children then began to plan their own narrative including heroes, villains, a problem and a solution, with of course, a talking animal. They began to thinking about good adjectives to use to enhance their writing. Year One have not been learning a new sound in Phonics, they have been using their phonic knowledge to read alien words. Year Two have been focusing more on reading, answering comprehension questions using their inference skills.

In Maths this week, Year One have been making groups. They have been dividing different numbers into groups and seeing how many groups they could make. They have also been starting to create and use arrays, looking at rows and columns. One of the Year Two groups continued to learn about halves and quarters in their fraction work and were able to find a half/ quarter of a shape and a number.

We have had the laptops out again in computing this week. The children can now all confidently log on. They then opened up Powerpoint and began to learn how to use some of the basic tools. They were able to use their knowledge of the keyboard from last time to type in a title and subtitle. They then had a go at changing the size, colour, and font of the text.

We are getting good at labelling parts of plants and explaining what each part does. We have been exploring around the school grounds and seeing what plants and trees grow in our area. We have thought about which ones are wild and have just grown there and which ones have been planted.

In RE, Year One have continued to look at stories of how we should treat people. They read a story from the Muslim faith called ‘Prophet Muhammad and the old lady’ and a story from the Christian faith about two friends called ‘David and Jonathan’. They discussed how they thought people should treat each other and why. Year Two were comparing The Five Pillars of Islam and the Ten Commandments. They noticed that they both have a rule about believing in only their god and putting him first. They thought about which of the rules they would find it easy or difficult to follow and why.

We had a ‘Now Press Play’ story in Geography, all about the seaside.

It’s been all about ball skills in PE. We have focused on passing and catching the ball. Concentrating on watching the ball, having our hands ready to receive the ball and thinking about how hard/ high to throw the ball so that our friend can catch it.

There was a fantastic end to the week, when we all enjoyed the production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’. We were very fortunate to have a theatre company into school again and the children absolutely loved it!
