EYFS – Newsletter – 07/11/2025
What a lovely first week back – we hope everyone had a nice break. Coming back to school after a break can be daunting but the kids have done remarkably well and settled back into routine with ease. This half-term we have a new ‘Toytown’ topic as we enjoy the lead up to Christmas. We began by sharing the story of ‘Dogger’ by Shirley Hughes and talking about how the character of Dave feels as he loses his very favourite toy. The children have loved sharing photos of their favourite toys with each other and talking about how special they are. Lots of children also chose to draw us a picture of their favourite toy, whilst others took on the challenge to create a picture of a teddy bear using only circles.
As it was Bonfire Night this week too, we had lots of fun painting colourful fireworks on black paper using only a drinking straw! The results were lovely as you can see below. As Remembrance Sunday falls this weekend, we also spent a Topic session learning about what Remembrance is and why we use poppies as a symbol of it at this time of year. Some children took the opportunity to visit the creative area and craft their own tissue paper poppy.
Our Phonics sessions this week have introduces the new sounds ‘o’ (orange) ‘c’ (cat) and ‘k’ (kite). The children have enjoyed activities to practise hearing these sounds in words; blending the sounds together to read words and segmenting the different sounds in their head to help spell simple words.
In Maths this week we’ve been investigating 2D shapes – in particular circles and triangles. After discussing the shapes and their properties, the children very much enjoyed a hunt around school looking for these shapes in the environment. They also sorted pictures based on their shapes and completed a treasure hunt outside to find some hidden shape pictures.
We know it’s still a little early for the ‘C’ work but this is a primary school and things go this way and Christmas is approaching fast! All the children should have come home on Friday with a painted card and order form. If you wish to order any cards with your child’s picture please return them to school by the end of next week. These make lovely Christmas cards for friends and family and also any orders help us raise money for school to use on future arts projects for the children to enjoy.
Have a lovely weekend!
