KS1 – Newsletter – 13.3.26
It was lovely to see the second round of parents and carers during parent’s evening this week. Thanks to everyone for your continued support.
We our getting more into our stride with the continuous provision afternoons in Key Stage One and began some new activities. The children have been making African necklaces and drawing African ladies. They have also been creating maps, using Beebots and building habitats for animals. After learning more about unrest both in history and noticing problems currently, the children designed their own peace flags.
This week has been our hot write week, based around ‘Meerkat Mail’. The children have planned and what they wanted to write about in their letter and then wrote their letter. They were pretending to be Sunny, writing home about his adventure. They had to include all the features of a letter, such as addresses, dates, who it was to and who it was from as well as the main content of the letter.
Year One have continued their learning about measurements. The two groups swapped this week and learned about weight or length respectively. There was lots of practical work within class and the children were able to use good vocabulary to describe what they saw and careful observations to measure accurately. One group in year Two continued to make arrays to answer multiplication questions. They also began to read and answer word problems using multiplication. The other Year Two group have been answering multiplication problems and have been doing more reasoning questions. They have been explaining what multiplication they are using and why.
We have continued to categorise animals in science this week. First, we discussed what it means to be a herbivore, carnivore and omnivore and put ourselves into the correct category. We then completed a venn diagram using those categories to record which animals were herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. Some we found very easy to categorise such as lions and zebras, some we found tricker like turtles and needed to google them to see what they ate!
In music, Year One began doing some active listening, thinking about the tempo and dynamics of the music. They then played lots of singing games, focusing on two notes and doing hand signs for each note. Year Two have been learning the song ‘Pease pudding hot’ and have learnt a clapping pattern to go with it. They then put their own percussion instruments to it.
In design technology the children have begun to stitch the back and front of their elephant together. They have been using running stitches and focusing on keeping their line straight.
After doing the base of their picture with coloured pastels and covering it with black last week, the children let their pictures emerge today in art. They used the end of a pencil, to scrap away the black, scraffito style, to reveal the colours for their picture underneath.
In computing, the children have continued to practise using an ipad to take photos and be able to save or delete them as appropriate.
We learned more facts about Nelson Mandela in history. We looked at when each of these things happened and began to put them in chronological order on a time line. We looked at many significant things in his life and how old he was when they happened.
In Geography, we continued to learn about compass points and direction. We used the story of ‘Handa’s Surprise’ to think about where she travelled. We then used a map to verbally guide Handa around, specifically using compass directional vocabulary.
It has been our alternative PE week and once again the children have had fun! Class 1 were doing yoga, class 2 were Bollywood dancing and Class 3 were doing table tennis and axe throwing.
