What an exciting, busy week it has been in Key Stage One!
We have been writing our own African stories in English this week. After reading ‘The cheetah’s whisker’, the children used the basis of the story to create their own, thinking about what animal they could take something from to create a friendship potion. They focused on good, sound sentences and using full stops and question marks.
Year One, have been learning how to count in 2’s in maths. They have recognised that it means missing every other number and all the numbers said are even numbers. They were able to fill in missing numbers and count groups in 2’s to make it quicker. In Year Two one group have been practising their times tables in a variety of ways and the other group have been working on divisions and noticing their relationships with multiplications.
In art, the children looked at the book ‘Giraffes can’t dance.’ They then built up their own picture of a giraffes, step by step, looking at all the little details.
Year One listened to the story of ‘Handa’s surprise’ in music. They added sounds to the story using percussion instruments. Year Two, continued working on ‘Pease pudding hot’ adding percussion accompaniment. They also listened to Elvis Presley’s ‘Hound Dog’ and created their own hand jive.
The elephants have still been a work in progress in design technology. The children have continued to sew their elephants, practising the skill of using a running stitch and also threading needles.
In our provision afternoons, the children have been practising using compasses, doing word searches about Nelson Mandela and discussing who he was and have been labelling body parts of animals. We have also seen some fantastic art work copying the style of Enfant Precoce, an African artist. They have also begun to make some African inspired instruments.
On Thursday, we had the rewards trip to the Big Swing. Children from the red team and those who had earned 50 team points, had a great day out, enjoying the very fresh air!! It was fantastic to see the children exploring and having fun, mixing between year groups and pushing themselves.
Finally, we finished the week with our Eid celebration. It was fantastic to see children coming in their traditional dress for our fashion show. We read a book all about ‘My Exciting Eid’ and made and decorated some lanterns for decoration. We also created a scene using watered down paints for the sunset and black to form the skyline. It was fantastic to be able to share some delicious food together, which was provided by our fabulous Muslim parents, staff and community.
