KS1 – Newsletter – 1.5.26
It’s been a lovely, sunny week in Key Stage One. Don’t forget, that next week is on four days, with the Bank Holiday on the Monday.
In maths Year One have been using their knowledge of counting in twos, fives and tens to count equal groups. They began by noticing when a group was equal and unequal, by the numbers in each group, not by how they were laid out. They then began to do repeated addition with the numbers in the group, eg 2 + 2 + 2 = 6. One group in Year Two continued their work on division. They have been answering word problems involving division and sharing out objects where necessary. The other group have been finding the fraction of a group of objects. They have been sharing the numbers out fairly into 2 groups to find a half, 3 groups to find a third and 4 groups to find a quarter.
After reading ‘One Giant Leap’ and learning various facts about Neil Armstrong, the children have been writing a recount in English this week. They thought about the path that Neil took to becoming an astronaut and what happened when he and his fellow astronauts went to the moon. Key facts were included such as him saying ‘One small step for man, one giant step for mankind!’
In Science the children continued to explore things that are living, dead or have never lived. They noticed that the things that have never lived are man made things. They sorted pictures into different categories and played a game to reinforce their learning. They also began to look at what things a living thing needs and drew a habitat for a given animal.
We began to look at warm and cold climates in geography. We did various sorting activities read facts about things like deserts and rainforests to be able to put places into different categories. We remembered that hotter countries were round the equator and noticed that although it’s often cold when it rains in England, in other places like the rainforest, it can be warm, even hot and wet.
In Forest schools, after playing some fun new warm up games, the children read a story and created a rocket picture out of natural materials. They were challenged to find things that were hard, soft, rough and smooth.
We began to look at rules in RE. We discussed all the different places we have rules, at school, home, on the road, in society. We thought about why rules were important for safety and to make things work well, even in games. We then learnt that Christians have a set of rules that they follow called The Ten Commandments. We heard about what each one was and discussed whether we thought it was a good rule or not. Most people thought that the most important ones and the ones they thought they should follow were ‘honour your Mum and Dad’, ‘Do not murder’ and ‘Do not steal’.
It was all about Athletics in PE. We were practising our running skills and thinking about how we could help ourselves to run faster. We looked at starting positions and how to pump our arms as well as our legs. We noticed it’s important to find a spot ahead to run towards, rather than looking around!
We looked at the importance of exercise and rest for our physical and mental health in PSHE. We thought about all the ways that we could exercise at home, school or in clubs. We practised some ways of doing exercises and noticed the affects on our bodies. We learned how important sleep and rest are, for our minds to be still and our bodies to grow.
Please keep sending things in for our junk modelling. We would especially appreciate tubes from kitchen rolls or wrapping paper, bottles and pots for things like yoghurt and coleslaw. Thanks in advance.
