KS1 – Newsletter – 12.6.26

We had a fabulous start to the week in Key Stage One with our trip to Cannon Hall Farm. The children enjoyed seeing all the different animals, some who had only just been born! We had a tour around the farm and learned about the different animals and how they are cared for. We observed the smaller animals in the mammal and reptile houses and were fascinated by the ants travelling above our heads on a rope. We also had great fun exploring the different playgrounds and watching sheep and ferret races!

After our visit to the farm, we have used this knowledge to write a view point narrative. They pretended to be an alien who crash lands on Earth and meets all the different animals for the first time. They have been describing what the animals look like and what they were doing, to create an account of the aliens visit.

Year One continued their work on fractions this week and began to learn about quarters. They are able to identify and colour a quarter of a shape. They can notice which shapes are divided into four pieces, but not quarters. They were also able to share quantities into four to find a quarter of a number. In Year Two one group have begun to tell the time, using o’clock and half past. The other group have begun working on measurements and have started with weighing. They had identified grams as the unit of weight and have been weighing objects and reading the scale.

In history, we began to look more at the life of Tim Peake. We read all kinds of facts about him and then looked at lots of statements about him and decided if they were fact or fiction. We could check what is a definite fact by looking back at his factfiles.

We began to look at animation in computing. To begin with, we looked at how a flick book works and the progression of the pictures. We then began to make our own flick books, drawing a stick man moving slowly across each of the pictures.

Year One continued with the Carnival of the animals in music. This week, they focused on the birds and aquarium. They incorporated lots of movement to go along with the music. They listened out for the flute and learned about a new instrument, the glass harmonica and tried to identify that within the music. Year Two have been working with the rhyme ‘Peas Pudding Hot’ that they have previously learned. They then created a dance to go with the rhyme.

In art, the children learned about ‘The Willow Pattern’ story and how it is depicted on a plate. The children then thought about their own stories and how they could draw them in a similar style for a plate.

In design technology, the children were testing out the catapult rockets they made last time. First, they fired them off and looked at how far their rocket travelled and whether others went as far, or further. They then evaluated their rocket, to see what worked well and what they would change next time. In food technology, the children watched some clips about what food looks like in space. They observed how some is in pouches and sucked through a straw. They then made their own ‘space puddings’ in sandwich bags and discussed how it would be best to eat them.
