KS1 – Newsletter – 25.9.26

We have continued to read a variety of Funny Bones books in our English lessons this week. We then used a picture stimulus to write some sentences about the characters. We have continued to practise our handwriting, really focusing on size and ascenders and descenders. We made funny bones pictures and sorted letters into categories. We have even been writing our own book reviews about some fo the different Funny Bones stories.

Year One have been practising counting to 100 and have been writing numbers in numberlines. They have started from different numbers and carried on writing the net three number and completed missing numbers on a number line. In Year Two, both groups have continued to work on their place value, partitioning numbers into tens and ones. They have used part whole models and bar models. One group have been using their reasoning skills to explain how to do things and spot mistakes and why they are incorrect. The other group have been looking at where the two digit numbers would appear on numberlines counting in 1’s, 2’s and 10’s according to their place value.

During our provision afternoons, the children were completing time lines of their day, thinking about what would happen first thing in the morning, during the middle of the day and in the evenings. They focused on trusted adults that we could turn to if we had a problem when using a computer or the internet in computing. In Science, they were investigating what things were magnetic and what things were not. They predicted what they thought would be magnetic and why before testing them to see if they were right. For geography, the children built on their knowledge about compass points and wrote directions to move an animals around a grid.

In food technology, the children were making a soft fruit salad. They practised their peeling skills for oranges and bananas and used knives to chop the fruit, looking at where to position their fingers to keep them safe.

The children recapped how to stay safe when working in design technology. This week they looked at how and why screws are used when making things and had a go at using a screw driver to screw and unscrew screw into wood.

In art, the children were using their observational skills to look at different animals and their prints. They used a variety of mark making skills such as dots, dashes, lines, swirls etc… to create texture to look like fur, feathers or scales.

Year One were practising using different voices with puppets in music. They began to learn how to follow a conductor, by starting and stopping as instructed. Both year groups listened to and responded to, live and recorded pieces of music. Year Two were thinking about how to respond with scarves and how they may move them around. They were also identifying loud and soft parts to the music.

In PSHE, we began talking about jobs. We thought about what a job is and why people have a job. We then looked at a variety of jobs and thought about what kind of things the people had to do. We thought about who would be a good person to do a certain job and why and thought about what jobs the children might like to do when they grow up and what impact their job could have on society.

We ended the week with our fabulous alternative PE. Each class completed the second session of the PE they did last time. Class One took their golf outside this week, Class Two continued to build on their fencing skills with the swords and Class Three practised bowling.

Thursday 10^th December – Grandparent nativity event – am Time TBC

Polite notice – We do not have lots of room in the hall. Therefore, we put on our nativity for parents and do a separate event for Grandparents to ensure there is space for everyone. We appreciate you coming to one event as appropriate.
