UKS2 – Monotype Printmaking – Art – 28.9.26

This week in Art, Upper Key Stage 2 have been exploring how music can inspire visual art. The children learned about monotype printing, a printmaking technique where artists create a one-off print using marks, lines, shapes and textures. Our inspiration came from Beethoven’s “Storm” movement from Symphony No. 6 (Pastoral Symphony). The children listened carefully to the dramatic music and considered the lines, shapes, textures and images that the sounds made them imagine. They discussed how the mood and atmosphere of the music could be represented visually. The children then experimented with a range of mark-making techniques to create expressive monotype prints. They made creative choices about the marks, shapes, lines and textures they used, thinking carefully about how these could capture the power, movement and atmosphere of the storm. It was wonderful to see the children experimenting confidently, taking creative risks and developing their own individual responses to the music. Each print was unique and showed how differently the children interpreted Beethoven’s dramatic piece.
