EYFS – Oil pastel pop art – Art – 29.9.28

Today in our EYFS art lesson, we explored the wonderful idea that it is okay to be different. We re-read Todd Parr’s book It’s Okay to Be Different and talked about the colourful illustrations, simple shapes and bold lines. The children shared their ideas about what made each character unique and discussed what makes themselves and their friends special. We then looked at the artwork of Keith Haring and noticed some similarities between his Pop Art style and Todd Parr’s illustrations. The children spotted the use of bright colours, simple shapes, bold outlines and playful pictures of people. They explored how both artists use colour and simple designs to celebrate individuality and express positive messages. Inspired by both artists, the children created their own drawings, using lines, shapes and colourful oil pastels to show some of their friend’s special features and characteristics. The children enjoyed sharing their artwork and talking about what they liked about their friends’ pictures. It was a lovely opportunity to celebrate friendship, creativity and the idea that everyone is special in their own way!
