EYFS – Forest School

We had a fantastic Forest Schools sessions today in Reception!

Mr Gamble trusted Reception with the task of weeding and turning over his vegetable beds in the school garden. Once clear, we planted out some lettuce and pumpkin plants which will continue to grow at school over the summer and into Autumn.

One activity that was enjoyed by many was a test of our own heart rates. As we had been learning this week about the importance of exercise for healthy growth we had the children attempt to feel their pulse rate at rest, after walking for two minutes and then after jogging for two minutes. Though some of the pulse counting was erratic to say the least, we all agreed that we could feel the heart pumping much faster after exercise and we discussed how this is the heart working to supply the muscles of the body with oxygen to keep us moving.

We also used this time to position the Reception scarecrow ‘Jack’ in his permanent home alongside the strawberry bed in the school garden, where we hope he will be useful in deterring any pesky birds from eating our crops of tasty fruit. Children also helped to gather herbs for cooking with and got to enjoy the treehouse apparatus and mud kitchen in the warm weather. We have been spoilt with such lovely weather so far this Spring – long may it continue!
