EYFS Newsletter – 02.10.26
Well, we are now over half way through our first half-term at school and Reception are well in the swing of things! Our topic of ‘All About Me’ has continued with us spending time thinking about the people who are important to us. Thank you so much to all the families that have contributed photos via Tapestry. The children have really enjoyed showing them to the class and talking all about the people that they love. We are working through sharing these photos with the class so if your child has not had chance to show theirs yet, we shall get to it next week.
Outdoors we’ve had a great flurry of activity with children getting stuck into all sorts of activities to test their skills. Lots of children had fun exploring the properties of a tray of sandy oobleck and even using sticks to practise the formation of the letters we have been learning in Reception. We also had an unfortunate lava pool appear in the playground through which the children were challenged to navigate balance beams and stepping stones, climbing over and under obstacles as they went. Children also had a splashing great time in the water area this week, investigating the capacity of a range of jugs and containers.
In our Phonics sessions this week we have introduced the phonemes /p/ (puppy) /i/ (insect) /n/ (nut). The children have learned an action to help remember the sound for each of the corresponding graphemes (the written letters). Through games and sorting activities the children had opportunities to rehearse hearing, recognising and using these sounds in simple words.
Maths sessions this week have continued our work on shape, space and measure. We have further explored concepts of comparing size, weight/mass, and capacity in a range of different ways. The children have been human balance scales to compare the mass of different objects using vocabulary such as lighter or heavier. Capacity was investigated with a range of containers in the water area with children using language to compare the fullness of these. And we considered size difference via the story of ‘Where’s My Teddy’ by Jez Alborough, after which the children helped to sort foods out by size for a teddy bears picnic.
Have a lovely weekend!
The Reception Team.
