EYFS Newsletter – 03.12.21

What a fun (if rather chilly) time it’s been in Reception this week! Monday morning saw children enjoying the snow that had fallen at the weekend, with Mr Joy leading sledging on the field.

Maths sessions found children learning about quadrilaterals. The groups explored squares and rectangles in a variety of ways so that the children can recognize and describe the properties of these shapes confidently.

In Phonics time we have been reviewing all of the phase 2 sounds we’ve learned so far and then using these sounds to read and write simple words using their newfound skills of segmenting and blending!

Forest Schools day on Thursday was dedicated to all things trees, as the school (okay, mostly Mr. Gamble!) has been planting hundreds of trees on site this week. We learned about the life cycle of a tree, then went outdoors to engage in some tree-based activities. The children helped to plant some trees; helped to identify trees by their leaves; created bark and leaf rubbings; and helped save seeds from the sneaky squirrels in a group game. We kept warm in the beautiful winter sunshine and had a lot of fun!

Of course this week, Christmas well and truly arrived at Cookridge! Reception class were invited down to the hall to help Mrs Hunter decorate the schools huge Christmas tree and did a marvelous job. On Wednesday the children were all super excited to find a surprise gift from Santa himself in the form on one of his elves. Jingle Bell the Elf has come to keep an eye on Reception Class but has proven to quite the mischief maker too as he seems to be happy making a mess wherever he goes!

NEXT WEEK: P.E. is on Tuesday of next week and we shall be in full-on rehearsal mode for our Christmas play so please can those with speaking parts keep practising at home to be the best that they can be. Thank you – have a lovely weekend!
