EYFS – Newsletter – 12/09/2025

It’s been a wonderful, wet and wild week in Reception, with lots of fun had by all.

We have introduced the children to our first topic of the year, which is ‘All About Me’ which will give us chance to learn about ourselves and each other. This week, we began looking at the five senses that we use to explore the world around us. We’ve had a range of sensory tests and challenges for the children to explore, including a mystery object each day to be investigated through the sense of touch only. The children were incredible at coming up with vocabulary to describe what they could feel (scratchy, smooth, bumpy etc.). We also had a challenge to identify five things hidden in cups by their smell which proved tricky for some! Next week we shall continue to investigate our other senses!

On Tuesday, the children were introduced to their Reading Buddies who will be visiting us from Class 10 in Reception each week to spend time together enjoying books. It was lovely to see the children getting to know each other and Reception enjoyed showing the big kids around!

Also, this week, we asked the children to draw us a self-portrait in pencil. This is an interesting activity that we typically ask the children to repeat at the end of the school year to see just how much they have developed skills and understanding over the course of their time in Reception.

Thursday saw Reception enjoy their first Forest Schools session, with Mr Gamble leading the children up to the school garden and outdoor classroom. There is a separate post on the school website with lots of pictures if you want to see what the children got up to!

Before we begin the more directed phonics and maths learning from next week, the children have loved spending time exploring the various areas of provision and getting familiar with our rules and routines. Take a look at some photos from the week below.

Have a lovely weekend!
