EYFS – Newsletter – 13/02/26

What a fun week in Reception to cap off a fantastic half term. Our Amazing Animals topic has brought us to the seas and oceans of the world and all their many inhabitants. The children have loved our topic sessions this week, in which we have compared the different ocean habitats and how the animals vary in different locations depending on the ocean temperatures. We also had a fascinating look at the Blue Whale, with the children thrilled to learn so many interesting facts about the largest creature on Earth. There have been lots of lovely art activities this week with children drawing undersea creatures, painting fish with bubble-wrap patterns and creating their own jellyfish! Reception even got it’s very own rockpool this week, with the children challenged to carefully count the different starfish, shells and pebbles positioned inside it.

Phonics sessions this week have introduced the ‘oa’ (boat) ‘oo’ (moon) and ‘oo’ (book) phonemes. The children have enjoyed getting chance to practise hearing, reading and writing with these sounds.

In our Maths sessions we’ve been investigating the numbers 9 and 10. The children have explored different ways to represent and compose these numbers as well as practise of careful counting strategies to count these larger numbers.

Of course, Friday has brought with it snow which delighted and excited the children. In our outdoor areas the children relished the opportunity to play in the snow, making snowballs, snow piles (it was a bit wet for snowmen!) and speedy sledge rides around the track!

At  the end of the day on Friday, the children were all sent home with log-in details for ‘Purple Mash’ ‘Numbots’ and ‘Twinkl Phonics’. These apps and web-based learning opportunities are available to use at home should anyone want to access these at any time (not just in the holidays!).

We hope everyone will have a lovely week’s break over half-term. We look forward to welcoming everyone back when we begin our new topic of ‘Around the World’ where we will be exploring life in the different continents of Earth.
