EYFS Newsletter – 17.06.22

It’s been a scorching week and we’ve had a ball in Reception!

Monday saw a very exciting visit from some every-day local superheroes, as some police officers dropped into Reception to answer questions and show our children some of the ways they help our community. We were shown into their police van and allowed the opportunity to dress up in the police body gear, hats and even handcuffs.

The sun shone on our Forest Schools session this week, which saw us out in the garden enjoying some superhero themed fun. The children were a great help in gathering firewood and helping Mrs Phelan to light a campfire on which to cook a Superhero Stew! As well as helping to build and tend the fire, some children helped to add ingredients to our stew pot and stirred it as it cooked on the open flames. Once cooked, the vegetable stew (full of superpower vitamins!) was enjoyed by many – with some coming back for seconds and thirds! Another fun activity involved working as a team to rescue teddies that had been kidnapped by the super-villains. The only trouble was… the floor was LAVA and the teams had to find ways to reach the teddies without touching the ground!

Maths work this week was all centered around the concept of odd and even. The children were fantastic as identifying odd and even numbers and showing this in a number of different ways.

Phonics saw the children further refining their sentence reading and writing with one of the activities asking the children to read and apply some new vocabulary after reading  Julia Donaldson’s ‘The Smartest Giant In Town’.

Children also had the opportunity to go on a Superhero Listening Walk around school to test out their super-listening skills and show us what they could hear around school.

Thank you to all parents and carers for helping us keep the children protected from the sun in the sunny weather this week. Going forward, it really does help to have a sun hat and sun cream in your child’s bag for weather such as this. Hopefully this won’t be the last of summer – Mr Green is working on a tan!

Have a great weekend!
