EYFS – Newsletter – 17/10/2025
Though the weather’s definitely cooling lately, things are definitely not slowing down in Reception! The children have been continuing to explore ‘All About Me’, and this week we’ve been looking at our bodies. We have named the different parts of our bodies from head to toe and taken a look at the skeleton and organs within. Lots of children took the challenge to practise their scissor skills to cut and stick together a skeleton picture or to order the different stages of life. Many were excited to have a go in our ‘finger gym’ where the children were tested with different fine-motor challenges such as snipping up leaves, spinning nuts free from bolts and freeing action figures from tangled elastic bands. We also talked about which foods were healthy or unhealthy for our bodies and the children had a go at sorting them.
Lately, the reception children have been a lot of interest in treasure maps, so we thought we would harness this into an activity that helped rehearse our phonics skills. The children were given a clipboard and sent off in search of six hidden treasure maps which each displayed three pictures. If the children could identify the initial sound of each item on the map they were able to write them into simple words and win the valuable treasure of team points for their colour team! Elsewhere in the classroom, we had the chance to practise our counting skills by fingerprinting caterpillars of the correct length and ordering beanbags.
Phonics sessions have been used to further embed our learning on the first six letter sounds s a t p i and n. The children have been exploring how to hear the initial sound in words. We have been very pleased to see the progress the children are making as they become more confident in these sounds with further time to practise.
Our Maths sessions have been exploring the numbers of 1,2, and 3. The children have been looking at various different ways that these numbers can be represented using pictures, objects and numerals. We’ve also been introduced to the popular BBC characters of the Numberblocks via the short videos which help support this learning on number and bring the concepts to life in fun and engaging ways.
On Tuesday, the children greatly enjoyed time with Mr Joy in the polytunnel where they were able to build on their hammering and sanding skills to join pieces of wood together.
And also with Mrs Durrant exploring rhythm and movement in a Halloween themed music session; and a spooky ‘Winnie The Witch’ themed art lesson with Mrs Ledda drawing on black paper!
Have a lovely weekend!
