EYFS – Newsletter – 20/06/25

What a scorcher of a week we’ve had in Reception! The children have had a fantastic time playing out in the sun – making performances in the stage; splashing about in the water area and building castles in the sand. We have also had a thrilling development in our Dinosaurs topic this week as after many days of waiting we arrived on Friday to find that the mysterious egg we had found on the field had hatched open! The children were excited to see the egg had split and across our room we found some clues to where the dinosaur may have disappeared to. Our snack tray had been upturned and there was a trail of empty pea pods leading away from our room and into the next-door class. Upon investigation, the children saw that there was also signs of footprints and they agreed that the trail of pea pods hinted that this baby dinosaur was a herbivore. We also noted that the dino had not harmed the pet hamster Marshmallow in Nurture class – which told us he must not be a carnivore.  Much relieved by this thought the children continue to speculate on the whereabouts of this baby dinosaur – we shall have to keep an eye out next week!

This week in our topic sessions we have been learning about fossils. The children have talked about what a fossil is and how they are formed over millions of years. We explored how our understanding of dinosaurs is all based on the study of fossils that have been found all over the world and how very clever scientists called palaeontologists have pieced together dinosaur skeletons from the fossils that they excavate. Some very helpful children very kindly brought in some amazing fossils from home which gave everyone a chance to see and feel some amazing examples for themselves. We have continued this investigation of fossils into our provision with some fun activities (see photos below).

Phonics sessions this week have concentrated on reading and writing words with the ccvc pattern (two adjacent consonants at the beginning of a word). The children have been absolutely blowing our socks off with how hard they have been working and their standard of work just keeps getting better!

In Maths, we have been exploring the concept of doubling and how in maths it means two times an amount or number. The children have had fun investigating doubles using practical resources and counting things out twice. A popular activity involved working with a partner to unlock a padlock by finding the correct key by matching a number with its double. We also recapped the meaning of the words ‘odd’ and ‘even’ and how we can use our work from previous weeks, putting groups into sets of two, to help decide if numbers were odd or even.

Thank you to everyone who came to support the children on Thursday’s Sport’s Day. The afternoon was a great success and the children did amazingly well, especially when considering the heat! There are photos to follow from the day on a separate web-post, so keep your eyes peeled!

NEXT WEEK we must decide which Reception children will be taken through to the final of the school-wide Poetry Slam final being held on next Saturday’s Summer Fair (Sat 28th). If any children are wanting to take part, please can they be prepared and rehearsed to read their poem for our audition round on Monday 23rd. We look forward to hearing these poems!

Have a lovely weekend
