EYFS – Newsletter – 21/05/26

As our ‘Let It Grow!’ topic comes to an end this week, we have been thinking about how we as humans grow and change throughout our lives. The children have greatly enjoyed sharing their own baby photos with the class, trying to guess who each one was and thinking about how much they have (or haven’t!) changed over the past few years. The adults in class also got in on the act and the children loved getting to work out which baby photo belonged to us grown ups. We had class discussions about the different stages of life and what each one brings as we grow from new-born babies who can’t even support their heads to full grown adults. We also discussed what we should do to lead healthy lives and keep growing strong with a combination of a good balanced diet and exercise. The children were then challenged to cut and stick the different stages of human growth in order.

Other challenges in class this week invited the children to practise their addition and subtraction to calculate their ages forwards and backwards from how old they are now. There was a bootcamp type affair outside for the children to have a go at different body movements to test their fitness levels by running, jumping, throwing and catching. We found that doing such exercises for one minute each really got our heart rates up and we felt the effects of such exercise on our bodies as we became warmer and needing to breath faster to recover.

We also discussed dental health and the importance of looking after our teeth by brushing at least twice a day and what may happen to our teeth as we grow. Some children in Reception have already begun losing some of their ‘baby’ teeth and we saw how our first set of teeth are replaced by ‘adult’ teeth and how we need to keep them nice and clean all through our lives. Many children took the challenge to write a promise to the tooth fairy and getting a chance to show off their amazing sentence writing skills in the process. The children were rewarded with a reply from the tooth fairy herself, along with a gift of a special golden back to keep their lost teeth in.t

Our other challenge this week was to study ourselves closely in a mirror and try to draw an accurate self-portrait, thinking carefully about the placement of the different features and making sure we thought about what colour our hair and eyes were (and reminding ourselves that we actually do have ears and eyebrows!). There was a lot of time and effort put into some of these portraits and they looked fantastic!

Since the start of term, the children have been monitoring and caring for their own bean plant and keeping a diary each week of its progress. And now – it’s over to you at home! The beans should have come home for you to look after. The half term looks like being a scorcher so good luck remembering to water it every day!

Phonics work this week has got us all refining our reading and writing skills as we’ve revisited the last of our Phase 3 phonemes. The children have worked really hard at applying their knowledge and understanding of these digraphs and trigraphs to

In our Maths sessions this week we’ve further investigated 3D shapes. The children have got more familiar with common solid shapes, their names and properties. To better understand that these shapes are made of 2D shapes (e.g. the pyramid is made up of triangles and a square base) the children were invited to dip them in paint and stamp them onto paper. The children went around the playground hunting out 3D shapes and then sorting them by their properties (shapes with a triangle face/shapes with a circular face etc.).

On Monday, Reception enjoyed their regular Movement Play time in the hall. With some new resources and extra layers of challenge being integrated, the children have found their gross motor skills and core strength put to the test in fun and exciting ways.

Have a lovely half term!

The Reception Team.
