EYFS – World Book Day 2026
We have had a fantastic time on World Book Day in Reception today! The children were spooked to see a bunch of Funny Bones skeletons at the door but soon realised it was only the usual crew and they bowled in in a brilliant array of costumes.
Thank you all for the time and effort in helping with such great costumes for World Book Day – the children were thrilled to show them off and had a great time playing with each other in character. Take a look at the gallery of costumes below and see who and what you can recongize!
In Reception, with the staff appropriately dressed we shared the story ‘Funny Bones’ by Janet and Allan Ahlberg and then the children chose from a selection of activities and challenges related to this classic story. Some children chose to retell the story using stick puppets and masks, taking turns to be the big skeleton, little skeleton and dog skeleton. To practise writing children could have a go at putting words in the characters mouths in a speech bubble sheet. There was s0me maths practise too with two activities to help rehearse our pairs of numbers that add to 10, by matching up pairs of skeletons or by finding two bags of bones that totalled together to make ten.
Inspired by the section of the book spent visiting the skeleton animals at the zoo, the children were challenged to build a zoo for the animals in the small world and to discuss a selection of animal skeleton x-ray pictures to try and work out which animal they belong to. And our creative area was full of activity too with children carefully cutting out bones to help assemble a moving skeleton model or using white paint on black paper to delicately paint the characters from the Funny Bones story. Outdoors there was a ‘dark dark’ obstacle course set up which the children had to tackle blindfolded with help and guidance from their friends! All-in-all a lot of fun was had on World Book Day in Reception and we hope the children enjoyed it as much as we did!
To cap off our day we were visited by two ‘Mystery Readers’ who came to share some favourite books with us. Thank you so much to Moussa’s mum and Henry’s dad for your excellent efforts and for helping us share the joy reading together.
