Key Stage 1 – Newsletter – 30.4.21

We have had another fun-filled, packed week in Key Stage 1. We hope that you are ready for the long weekend! Remember, we come back to school on PPA Tuesday, so please send your child in their PE kit.

‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ has been a big focus across Key Stage 1 this week. Class 2 have been comparing and writing about different versions of the story. In Year 2, the children have been reporters, interviewing the Giant and writing Newspaper accounts of what happened when Jack stole items from the Giants castle. Class 1 have been reading ‘The Enchanted wood’ and creating their own setting using boxes and crafting materials. They then created their own world that could be at the top of the Faraway tree and wrote about it.

In Maths we have all been taking on different challenges. Classes 1 and 3 have been developing their measuring skills. Class 1 have been using non-standard units of measure and Class 3 have used standard units of measure, using rulers and metre sticks. Class 2 have  been doing addition and subtraction number problems, with missing numbers. Class 4 have been practising their multiplication skills, through a variety of games and using these to write fact families for division.

We used our Maths skills in the Forest Schools session on Monday. We measured natural materials, such as branches, leaves etc.. using standard and non-standard units of measure. We estimated how long things were and then measured them to see how accurately we had estimated. We then compared objects, seeing which were longer and shorter. We tried to find similar lengths of wood to create the walls of a house.

In Computing, we are getting good at following an algorithm to program The Beebots. Therefore, this week, we began to write our own algorithms. We decided where we wanted the Beebot to travel from and to and then stuck the buttons we needed to press in our books in order. We used our algorithms to program the Beebot to see if they were correct.

In Science, we have all begun to plant things to observe how they grow. In Year 1, they have planted cress seeds and thought about what the seeds will need to grow. Last week, Year 2 planted Sunflower seeds and have been ensuring they have water to help them grow. They then wrote an account of a seed growing – having watched time lapse videos, to explain the process of the seed growing into a full flower.
