KS1 – Big Garden Birdwatch – Forest School
This weekend it is the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch which is the world’s largest garden wildlife survey- over 590,000 people took part in 2025. In preparation for this, KS1 pupils have been learning all about birds today in their Forest School sessions. Pupils have led their own learning by choosing to make bird fat balls using lard and bird seeds with string attached to hang them from trees to feed our feathered friends an energy boosting snack. Some children chose to go on their very own birdwatch around our Forest School area where they used a bird ID sheet to help them identify the birds they spotted. They were so excited to find a wide range of birds including blue tits, robins, wood pigeons, crows, blackbirds and a wren made an appearance! The final activity involved learning about some common garden birds and their coloured markings. Pupils could choose one and do some mindful colouring where pupils had to match the colours of the birds, taking care to study the colours of each individual bird or they could colour their very own bird how they wished! The final activity involved making bird puppets using pictures, glue, scissors and lollipop sticks which they were then free to go outside and build nests for and role-play with! It was great to see and hear the puppets go on some wonderful adventures around the trees.

We even managed to squeeze in some time to watch a live stream video of a bird feeder as part of the BBC’s Winterwatch coverage. The children asked for me to share the link so they could watch it at home – please use this link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p012msk2
