KS1 – Newsletter – 13.5.22

The children have been enjoying more of our animals topic this week.

It’s been all about ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ across Key Stage One this week. Year One have been using the inspiration from the book, to create their own alliterative character eg Mr Careful Cat. They then created their own stories using their character. Year Two have enjoyed beginning to read ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’. They have been delving into the texts to find character descriptions and have been using these to write about and compare the characters. On Friday 27th May in the afternoon we would like to watch the ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ film after reading it this half term. This is a PG film, please let your child’s class teacher know if you do not want your child to watch it.

In Maths, Year One have begun to look at repeated addition and have making and identifying their own arrays. Year Two have been doing lots of practise and consolidation around the four operations. They have been doing this in straight forward question form and identifying which operation is needed to answer a word problem.

Our animal theme has continued in our Science work this week. We have been learning about what animals need to survive. We know that animals benefit from lots of things, but they cannot survive without air, food and shelter. We read about budgies, what they like to eat and how they are raised and we wrote a fact file about them.

In Geography, the children have been identifying continents and countries on a map. They have been thinking about which continent different animals live on and why they inhabit those areas.

In Music, the children continued to learn about and listen to ‘The Carnival of the animals’. This week they focused on elephants and kangaroos. They used xylophones and chime bars to play two tone drones on. Keeping up with the theme, in Art the children were designing kangaroos. They made aboriginal art work, using cotton buds dipped in paint, to create their piece.

In RE this week, Year one have been looking at what it means to belong to a church. They have looked at some church buildings and some of the features they may see in a church. They have also learned about people taking communion and why they do this. In Year two, the children have continued learning about rules and practises and why they are important. They learnt about the five pillars or Islam, what they are and why they should be observed.

Mrs Koopman’s daughter Ruby, is continuing her fund raising and has another event coming up on 21st May 4-6pm. It is a ticketed event and if you would like a ticket, please see Mrs Koopman.
