KS1 – Newsletter – 15.5.26
We were doing a hot write in English, based on all the things that we have learned about Neil Armstrong. We took the facts we know and inserted them into a historical narrative, adding extra details about what happened, to make our stories interesting. We then published the stories for our reading folders.
In maths, Year One have been learning how to share fairly. They have been sharing different numbers into 2, 3, 4 and 5 groups, ensuring there is the same number in each group. One group in Year Two, have begun learning about fractions and this week have been identifying and creating fractions of shapes. The other group have been answering different reasoning questions all around fractions.
We began learning about mini beasts in science this week. We listened to a ‘Now Press Play’ story all about mini beasts and where they live. Then, the children created a whole variety of habitats using different resources and thought about what kind of animals might live there eg forests, oceans, gardens, icy regions etc..
In geography, the children have been thinking about what things are human features and what things are physical features. The main thing to notice is that things that have always been there like hills are physical features. Anything that has been made by humans are human features. They also began to look at what an ‘aerial’ or ‘birds eye view is. They began to sort pictures into groups of whether they are taken from above or not.
In RE, we continued to think about how we follow rules in our lives and the sort of ‘rules’ that are followed in religions. Today we focused on The Five Pillars of Islam. We learned about what each of the pillars are and why they are important for Muslims to follow them.
Due to the weather and difficulty moving around school due to SAT’s, the children had an indoor session for forest schools. They used clay to create some small pots. They practised rolling out the clay and ensuring there are no air bubbles. They practised shaping the clay and forming it into the correct shape, before printing letters and symbols into the clay.
In computing, the children continued to explore 2question on Purplemash. They were asking questions to form pictograms about animals linked with science and using information from pictograms to answer questions about the data shown.
To acknowledge the brilliant work of David Attenborough and celebrate his hundredth birthday, we spent some time learning about his life and the work he has done. We created play dough animals and posters about looking after the environment and animals
We were thinking about the choices we can make in PSHE. We noticed how some choices were ok which ever we chose eg to play with lego or paint, to wear blue socks or red socks etc.. Some choices were more important to get correct eg whether it is safe to play in a certain area, to treat people kindly or hurt them, to go to bed and go to sleep or stay up doing other things. Some choices have bad consequences for ourselves or others, so we need to make the best choices.
In PE, the children were practising how to jump well. We looked at what we need to do with our arms, as well as our legs, to help us to jump higher or further.
