KS1 – Newsletter – 19.6.26

We hope that you are all cheering on England and other countries you’re linked with in the World Cup. Thank you to everyone who dressed in red, white and blue or football tops on Wednesday to raise money for school funds.

In English, the children have written their viewpoint narrative about an alien crash landing on Earth and exploring a farm. Once these were completed, the children published them for their folders.

It was all about money in maths for Year One this week. The children were able to identify and name different coins and notes and recognised which hold greater value. They also began to think about which coins they could use to buy different items. In Year Two, one group were reading scales to measure in weight and were problem solving. The other group were reading clocks to within 5 minutes.

In geography there was a whole range of activities to help the children to understand about aerial views. They made Cookridge out of the small world blocks and then looked down onto it to help them draw a map. They worked together with the teacher to make a key for things like tables in the classroom and then created an aerial map together of the classroom. They have also been looking at flags of different countries that are in the world cup and finding the countries in an atlas.

Time Peake was the first British Astronaut up in Space, visiting the International Space Station. In history we read a fact file about Time peake, his early life, career and then his time on the ISS. We then read some statements about him and decided whether they were facts or incorrect. We looked back at the factfile to find out for sure. We discussed how sometimes we can read statements (especially online) that may not be a accurate and it is important to check the facts.

We have been consolidating learning about habitats in Science. They followed a ‘Now Press Play’ story, to visit a variety of habitats and notice what animals and plants live there and why. They completed different sorting tasks for where animals and plants live and also drew pictures around different animals to show what their habitat is like.

Everyone had a fabulous ‘World cup’ themed forest school session. They painted England flags and then whittled sticks to make a flag pole to hang their flag on. They made ticket booths out of natural materials and created football pitches. They also glazed the pots they had previously made.

We linked our PSHE with PE and the World Cup this week. Different groups were doing activities such as playing games and discussing how it feels to lose and how we should behave. We were also looking at how to play together in teams and what we need to do to be successful as a team.

We were practising for sports day in PE. We had a go at lots of different races and also thought about some of the skills we needed to be successful at the field events, such as throwing.

In RE, we continued to learn about prayer. This week, we found out about how Muslims pray. We learned about their special washing routing ‘The Wudu’ that is completed before washing. We looked at prayer mats and had a turn to see how they kneel down to pray. We also looked at how they pray five times a day and always face in the direction of Mecca.

Dates for your diary.

Wednesday 24th June – Sports day. KS1 – 1pm – 3pm. Please all wear PE kit for the day
