KS1 – Newsletter – 2.10.26
In our last week of focusing on ‘Funny Bones’, the children have been writing their own stories. They have planned them, thinking about which characters they wanted to be and also include in their story, where the story would happen and then included a problem and a solution. They then ‘published’ their work for their folders.
In Year One, the children have been learning how to find one more and one less than a number. They have done this is a variety of practical ways using ten frames and different resources. They have also been looking at number lines and noticing that one more is the number after and one less is the number before. Year Two have been using the greater and less than < > signs to compare two-digit numbers. They have done this with written numbers and base ten representations of the numbers. They are beginning to use their reasoning skills to explain how they know the answers to questions.
We had a fantastic topic day on Wednesday. The children were exploring how to work scientifically in different ways for science. They had torches and looked at what kind of shadows were made with solid objects, transparent objects and ones that had holes in. They observed fruit and vegetables that have been left out for a couple of weeks now and have been drawing what they look like now. They also practised using magnets. They looked at photographs of animals and matched them to their x ray, using observational skills.
In geography, they were outside, locating different parts of the playground from photographs and noticing which parts were missing. They then used a plain map to add features of the playground in the correct place and developed a key to use.
We read the story of the ‘Bowerbird’. We discussed habitats and why they are needed. The bowerbird builds and elaborate structure of a nest that the children observed. The children then went to create their own nest (habitat) for the bowerbird.
We were focusing on fundamentals and dance in PE this week. In our fundamental lessons, were thinking about how to jump and how to improve height and distance when jumping. We used different equipment to help us practise jumping such as hoops and hurdles. In dance we were putting together a sequence of movements counting in eight beats.
In RE, we were thinking about books and the different ways we use them eg for recipes, maps, finding out facts or reading stories for fun. We then talked about how people who have a faith have a special book which they read to learn more about their god. We looked at some Bibles, some for children and some for adults and also some Qu’ran. We looked at how the Qu’ran is held and used and the fact it is written in Arabic.
We were thinking about how to be safe when on line gaming in PSHE. We discussed what to do if a pop up came up during a game and what to do if someone the children don’t know messages them. We also looked at the effects gaming can have on our head, eyes and mood if we stay on them too long and what other choices we could make.
