KS1 – Newsletter – 20.3.26
Eid Mubarak! We hope all of you celebrating have a wonderful time with your families.
What a difference the sun makes and it’s been a lovely, happy week in KS1.
Year One had begun counting in 10’s in maths. They noticed that the ones number never changes when counting in tens. We have been learning songs to help us to count and have completed lots of activities identifying groups of tens and counting in tens in a variety of ways. In Year Two, one group has continued to practise their multiplications and began to answer questions using bar models and other representations. The other group have begun work on division. They began by learning how to share fairly into equal groups.
In English the children have been listening to a traditional tale from Africa called ‘The cheetah’s whisker’. We looked at the features of a traditional narrative, ready for when we write our own. We designed our own friendship potion and then matched words that described different animals and their features. They also read through their own version of the story, spotting phonemes.
On topic day, the children had fun exploring lots of different activities. In the Science room, they had different activities to categorise animals according to their classifications, what they eat and where they live. They also had riddles to try and identify animals and colour them. We were unable to get in the garden for forest schools due to work being done, so the children enjoyed learning about St Patricks day and completing lots of crafty activities linked with this.
The children have continued to practise their skills of using compass points in geography. They used a map to guide each other around as Handa to collect all the lost fruit. Outside, they drew compasses on the floor and used the points to give their friend directions to get them to different points on the playground.
In RE, the children learnt all about Lent and how Christians count down for 40 days to Easter. They heard about how they may choose to give up a certain food such as crisps or chocolate during Lent. They made links with Ramadan and choosing to fast, but also the fact Christians may read their Bibles more and pray more during Lent.
Remember, if your child has taken a photograph for the photography competition, please send it into school in either a physical copy or on e mail. The children continued to use the ipads to take photos. They used the story boards they had previously designed, to draw a picture on their wipeboard to be able to create the backdrop for an animal and then took a photo of it. They then drew the next scene and took a photo. They could scroll across the pictures to explain to an adult what is happening.
The children got to practise some of the skills they began to learn when we had the gymnastics instructor in during PE this week. They practised different balancing and jumping skills and thought about how to position their bodies and bend knees for safe landings etc..
In our PSHE lesson, we were thinking about what it means to be a good member of our community and how we can demonstrate that. We thought about the new outside area that we have been developing and starting to use. We discussed ways that we could look after it and keep it looking nice.
