KS1 – Newsletter – 21.11.25
You will be pleased to know that the rehearsals for Christmas play “Hay Presto!” are in full swing. The children are already impressing us with their fabulous singing and amazing acting. Thank you to you all for helping your children practise their words at home if they have a speaking part. Please continue to do this to build their confidence and to help them remember them.
In English we have been thinking about what makes a good balanced argument; how there needs to be two sides showing different opinions and how we can make a decision having heard both sides. We answered some questions like ‘Should we have a longer play time?’ Thinking about arguments for and against, before drawing a conclusion. We have also been looking at the long vowel sounds in words and categorising them by the sound they include.
Year One have been comparing numbers in maths. They have been using the greater than, less than and equals to signs to compare numerals, numbers in words and other representations of number using things like Numicon and Base ten. One group in year two have been subtracting using column subtraction with exchanging. They have also answered word problems selecting the correct information to use in a column subtraction. The other group has continued with column addition, with carrying. They have also done this with practical resources and putting the numbers into bar models and whole part models.
We have been looking at maps of the world in Geography. We identified which parts were the continents. We learned a song about the continents, naming them in order of size. We looked at some of the specific features of each continent, it’s climate, what animals live there and other features such as specific mountains and rivers. The children were able to label the continents on a map.
In RE, we were learning about how Christians welcome babies. They have a Christening service in a church and the vicar puts oil or water on the baby’s head in the sign of a cross. Candles are lit and prayers are said. We acted out the scene, with children being the babies parents, godparents and the vicar.
We have been identifying different properties of materials in science. We thought about whether they were hard, soft, smooth, rough, transparent, magnetic etc… We were able to record in a chart which properties each material had.
We discussed what bullying means in PSHE. We recognised that something becomes bullying when it is done repeatedly or happens to the same person. We thought about how we would like other people to treat us and how we should treat them. We also talked about who we could talk to and what we could do if we felt that we were being bullied.
We were practising fundamentals in PE lessons. This week, we were learning to skip. To do this, we practised hopping, jumping and then skipping, swinging our arms to move forwards well.
In Computing the children were thinking about the important rules and principles for writing an algorithm. They began to learn the importance of writing clear and precise instructions when their teachers turned into robots and followed instructions the children gave them EXACTLY! This caused some problems in Year One where the children were telling the robot how to brush it’s teeth. There was toothpaste on the wrong side of the brush, up the robots face and there was even spit on the floor!! In Year Two there were different problems as they instructed the robot on how to make a jam sandwich. They ended up with hands in butter and butter and jam spread everywhere apart from where it should be!
Some children from Class One also enjoyed a trip up to the care home on Thursday to share their books with the residents there. They worked hard on sounding out their words and talking about what they had been reading about. They were rewarded with a biscuit each!
