KS1 – Newsletter – 21.5.26

Wow, we’re at the end of another half term already, that was a quick one! Enjoy the week off and we hope to see you all refreshed for the start of June.

In Year One maths, the children have been learning the difference between capacity and volume. They observed and created different volumes in a variety of containers, noticing which containers had more/ less liquid and which ones could actually hold them most. They also solved reasoning problems around capacity and volume. Year Two have been doing a round up of all the things they have been learning in maths so far this year, checking where they feel confident and identifying any gaps.

In English, some groups finished off their story about Neil Armstrong and published them. We had a specific focus on real and alien words for year one, spotting digraphs and decoding a variety of words. Year Two were also focusing on Common Exception Words.

We had a fascinating visitor visiting us for our history lessons….. Neil Armstrong himself dropped in! We put him in the hot seat and the children asked him questions all about his trip to the moon. They also had a written task, to reply to an email sent from Neil Armstrong.

In science, the children continued to learn about habitats and microhabitats. Organising creatures into the best habitat for them and thinking about why this was the case. They also looked at similar animals that would share a habitat.

We have been using the ipads again in computing answering and creating questionnaires on 2count. We have collected data about peoples favourite animals and things, but have then taken photographs of our friends and other things around the classroom to create more charts for collecting data.

Year One have continued with ‘The Carnival of the Animals’ in music. Today they were focusing on the hens, roosters and wild donkeys. They were listening out for characteristics in the music, listening out for different instruments and thinking about how the music made them feel. Year Two have been working with a rhyme about monkeys. They then used speech rhythms, to compose their own section. They then performed it using book whackers.

In art, the children had a go at frottage. They took natural materials and used them for rubbings. They looked at the marks they created. They then tried the same thing with man made materials like lego and noticed the difference in the markings.

In design technology, the children began to created their rockets. They used foam piping and began by adding fins onto the sides. In food technology, the children were making ‘space soup’ (aka tomato soup!) They used their chopping skills and enjoyed tasting what they had made.

Enjoy the week off and we’ll see you for more space adventures next half term!
