KS1 – Newsletter – 22.5.25

Wow, we are at the end of another half term! Time is flying by. Enjoy half term, do not send your children to school tomorrow (Friday 23rd) as it is a training day.

We have been looking at lots of Traditional Narratives over the past couple of weeks in English. This week, the children have been writing their own. They detailed what happened to their hero and who their villain is and what they did. There of course was a talking animal and most were able to demonstrate a lesson that needed to be learned. Year One have been focusing on silent /e/ in phonics in words such as have and gaze.

In maths, Year One have been sharing amounts out as the beginnings of addition. into 2, 3, 4, 5 etc… Year Two have been finding fractions of amounts. They have been focusing on the denominator and what they need to share the number into. For all of us, we have been using the rhyme ‘When we share it must be fair’.

After painting pictures in the style of Alfred Wallace last time in art, the children have been adding to their pictures today. Using pieces of scrap paper, they have made ships and things to put onto their scenes and added more detailing with charcoal.

In Science we have been exploring our school grounds and seeing what kind of plants and trees are growing there. We have been learning the terms deciduous and evergreen. We talked about which trees are deciduous and which are ever green and how we could tell the difference. We talked about what they would look like in different seasons.

Continuing with our seaside topic, in Geography we have been looking at and labelling features of the coast. We have noted what things are similar to the ones where we live eg houses and which are very different eg. the sea. The children then organised them into categories of human and physical features.

It has been sew, sew, sew much fun in Design Technology. After designing their puppets, the children began to sew some features onto one side of their felt, including things such as eyes and a nose.

Year One have continued to listen to ‘The Carnival of the animals’ in music. This week they have been listening to the Hens and Roosters and characters with long ears. Year Two have been watching Tom and Jerry, what fun! First, they listened to it without the sound track. They then discussed the impact the music has on it. They then began to make their own sound track on Purple Mash.
