KS1 – Newsletter – 23.10.25

It’s been a long, but great half term for KS1. The children have all been fantastic, but deserve a week (and a day!) off to relax before we get stuck into the Christmas half term! See you all again on 3rd November!

Thank you to everyone who sent in items for the harvest. These have been collected by ‘Homeless Street Angels’, who will be distributing them to those in need. We enjoyed the Harvest celebration together, where we sang some of the classics like ‘Cauliflowers fluffy’ and ‘Conkers’ as well as each class performing songs, poems, quizzes and showing off various art and craft pieces made int eh classrooms and at forest schools.

We started off our week with a great adventure, seeking out the strange sightings up on the school field. We found all kinds of coloured balls and one area filled with blue balls. What could they be? We had lots of suggestions, but then followed clues to read ‘The Bog Baby’. We created our own Bog Babies and made habitats for them in glass jars. We have also been looking at different types of sentences and categorising them according to whether they needed a full stop, an exclamation mark or a question mark.

Year One have been reading and writing numbers in words in our maths lessons. Some of these were easier than others! We played games and did matching activities – but why not keep practising them at home, especially that tricky number eight. One group in Year Two have been using their column addition skills to answer reasoning and word problems. The other group have been looking at number bonds to 10 and 20, identifying them, finding hidden parts and quickly recalling them.

We have been working scientifically again thinking about the best ways to collect data in science. This week we asked the question ‘What is the most popular eye colour in our class?’ We collected the data and recorded it on our charts. We then used the data to ask questions to find out things like how many children have green eyes, or what’s the least and most popular colour.

In music, the children were focused on Halloween. They have been playing Halloween games, singing songs and making patterns out of pictures to follow and speech patterns from Halloween pictures.

It was all autumnal in food technology this week, making apple crumble. The children focused on the rubbing method, blending the butter, flour and then sugar for the topping – and they were all very happy to taste this one after it had been baked! In design technology, the children were attaching their towers/ turrets to their castles with a glue gun (and careful adult supervision!) They fixed their drawbridges and began to paint the structure.

We couldn’t have our usual alternative PE on Friday afternoon as we are not here, but we didn’t want any groups to miss out on the skate park, so one group went on Wednesday. It was their first time there, but they had a great time over coming fears and practising new skills.

Dates for your diary.
