KS1 – Newsletter – 26.6.26
It has been an incredibly hot week in Key Stage One, but we appreciate your support in ensuring the children have hats, sun cream and water bottles. Sadly, we had to cancel Sports day this week for the children’s safety, but hope that the weather will be on our side and that you will be able to join us for our new date on Thursday 2nd July.
We are taking on the role of Newsreaders for a couple of weeks and have begun the process this week in English. We have been designing our studio, thinking of a logo and choosing headlines for our reports. We have been reading a book about Helen Sharman and learning facts about how she ended up being the first British female in orbit. We also researched facts about her on line.
Year One have begun to learn about time this week. They have been thinking about what happens in order during the day. They have then learnt about the days of the week and months of the year and what order they come in. They have also looked at how to read from a calendar of a week or a month. One of the Year Two groups has also continued with their work on telling the time, but also looking at how long different activities take and how they can be measured. The other group have been finishing their block of measuring using weight, recognising how many grams are in a kilogram and measuring accurately.
We have begun looking at food chains in science. After recognising that animals survive in their environment partly due to there being food for them there, we looked at what animals eat and how some animals can be both predator and prey. We worked together in groups to see how many different food chains we could make, noticing that the first thing in the chain is something plant based.
We have been finding out facts about Neil Armstrong in history. We looked at where he went and in what year. We then compared this to Helen Sharman. We thought about where she went and what she did. We looked at where they were both from and what their main job was.
In computing, the children have been finishing off their flip books. They then began to build up their animation skills by working on 2animate. They used a similar method of drawing pictures as they did in their flip book. They used the onion tool to build up on what they had done in the previous picture, to know which things need to stay exactly the same, such as hills or trees and what needs to move, eg the rocket.
In Music, Year One had their final session on ‘The carnival of the Animals’. This week looking at fossils and kangaroos. They listened to features in the music, moved to the music and listened out for different instruments in the orchestra. They have brought their books home, feel free to listen to the last ones and finish them at home. Year Two have been doing some rhythm composition work, using some basic rhythmic building blocks. They also did a listening challenge where they had to match statements to the music they heard.
In design technology, the children have been making, designing and colouring flags and attaching them to sticks as a flag pole. With the weather being so warm, the children designed, coloured and made their own fans to help them keep cool.
To finish the week we all participated in our alternative PE sessions. In Class One, they were fencing, practising their skills of moving forwards and backwards with the correct foot position and how to lunge effectively. Class Two have been learning how to skip with ropes. They have looked at how wide they need to hold their arms and swing the rope and how to do both this forwards and backwards. In Class Three they began to learn how to play gold. They used putters and practised holding them correctly before hitting the ball into a target.
Dates for your diary.
