KS1 – Newsletter – 27.2.26

We have begun a new and exciting timetable in Key Stage One this week that the children may have told you about. During our afternoon sessions, the children are beginning to experience continuous provision, with lots of different activities for them to try. Over the coming weeks and months we will be adding in more resources and plans which we can’t wait to share with the children….and you! Check out the photos to see some of what they have been doing.

In English, we are having a renewed focus on handwriting and have begun a new fluency experience, practising sentence writing, up levelling and editing. We have read the story of ‘Meekat Mail’ and read a set of instructions to be able to create a meerkat mask. We have also looked at the letters and postcards that Sunny sends and have been looking at the features of a letter.

Year One have been doing lots of missing number problems in Maths. They have learned the skills of using basic inverse and also noticing how they can add on or subtract from a given number. In Year Two, one group have been learning about money. They have been identifying coins and working out which coins can be used to buy different items. The other group have begun to learn about drawing arrays for the beginning of multiplication.

It has been all about classifying animals in Science this week. The children have been identifying whether the animals are mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians etc.. and what it is about them that puts them into those categories.

Along with our Africa theme, we have been learning about Nelson Mandela in history. We heard about who he was, what he did, the things that happened to him good and bad and how change came about in South Africa as a result.

We have begun to learn new skills of taking photographs in our computing lessons. The children have been learning how to use the ipads to take photos, having chosen a subject, to think about where to position it in the picture and take the photo. They have also begun how to store and delete the pictures.

In Music, Year One listened to the story of ‘Strega Nona’. They explored using long and short sounds using pasta. Year Two have been learning a song called ‘Who’s that tapping at the window?’. They had their own rhythm conversation, writing it down using stick notation.

In design technology, the children began to sew their designs onto their elephants. They began to learn how to do running stitches and how to keep the thread on their needle!

The children began a mini project in art. They used pastel crayons to create a base layer for their art work and then covered it in black paint. Stay tuned to further newsletters to see what they do next!

We were discussing strangers in PSHE. We were emphasising the fact that we don’t know strangers and that is why we don’t talk to them or go somewhere with them. However, there are some strangers who are there to help us; for example doctors, fire fighters, police officers etc.. we thought about times that we might need to speak to these strangers and how we can keep ourselves safe.

We of course ended the week with our fabulous Alternative PE. This week the children experienced Bollywood dancing, table tennis, axe throwing and Yoga.
