KS1 – Newsletter – 27.6.25
Thank you to everyone who has supported the school by bringing things in for the Summer fair. We hope that we will see many of you there tomorrow to make it another great success.
We began to read a new book in English called ‘Dear Greenpeace’. The children had great fun making whales at the beginning of the week and thinking about what things are included in a letter. Year One have been looking at using alternative sounds to spell words and identifying which is correct. Eg sleep, sleap, slyp, etc… Year Two have been practising their handwriting and looking at the correct joins for the different letters. In phonics, year one have been adding suffix endings including -ing and -er and looked at how these change a word so that a verb is happening right now, or the verb changes into a noun. Teach – teaching – teacher.
In Maths, Year One have begun looking at time. They have thought about simple things like what happens before and after other things. They then moved on to looking at the days of the week and months of the year. They have ordered these things and began to look at calendars and how to read information from a calendar. In Year Two, one group has continued with statistics. They have been making and reading pictograms and understanding what part of a picture represents. The other group have been focusing on position and direction.
We have enjoyed observing the different ways the beans grew according to their conditions in Science. We found that the ones that had been given no water, did no grow even if they were in the light. The bean in the light that was given water grew well and was green. The bean in the dark with water had grown a lot (we think looking for the light) but it was pale and unhealthy looking.
It’s been all about the seaside in history. We have been looking at pictures and working out whether they show seasides in the past or in the present. We noticed colour photos and the fact they would be from the present, but also observed things like the style of clothing that told us whether it was from the past or present. We learnt about things like bathing machines that people used to get changed in to go swimming.
We have been trying to get the puppets finished in design technology this week. We have been carefully sewing around the edges to finish them off.
Year One have continued with the carnival of the animals in music, this week focusing on tortoises and the elephants. They have listened out for various things in the music, move in the style of the creatures and talked about how the music made them feel. Year Two, have been doing musical kebabs. They have created a piece of music that goes for example loud, quiet, loud. They have learned that this is the turnery form aba.
In art, after designing shells last time, the children have been making shells out of soft clay. They played around with a variety of different shapes and forms and thought about ridge patterns that may appear on the outer side.
In PSHE, Year One were thinking about the diversity we have in Britain. They thought about all the different aspects that make Britain Great. Year Two were focusing on resilience. They discussed things they find tricky and what they can do to build resilience; keep practising, don’t give up, listen to advice, keep trying etc..
In RE, Year One were learning about what happens in a church. They learned that people sing, read the Bible, have Sunday School and take communion. Year Two were learning about how Christians pray. They found out that they can pray anywhere, at any time. Some people kneel, some put their hands together and close their eyes, some people hold things in their hands to focus.
Have a great weekend!
