KS1 – Newsletter – 3.10.25

It has been a fantastic week in Key Stage One and all the children are settled and happy learning together.

We began reading the book ‘Me on the map’ in English, which ties in with our geography topic of looking at the place where we live. The children learnt about the circles of where they live from living on Earth, to living in Europe, The UK, England, West Yorkshire, Leeds and then Cookridge. They drew pictures to show what they knew about the area they live in. They have also been looking at word categories and identifying whether they are nouns or adjectives. Year One have been learning how to read and spell words including the /ie/ for pie sound in phonics.

In Maths, Year One have been counting forwards and backwards from 100. They have created numberlines on the playground in chalk and have identified missing numbers on number lines and one hundred squares. They have also been counting backwards from a given number and recording it in their books. In Year Two, one group have been comparing two-digit numbers using the greater and less than signs. The other group have begun to use place value charts to add two digit numbers.

In RE, the children built on their knowledge of what Christians believe, learning about who they believe God is, as God the Father, son and Holy spirit. They learnt about how Christians believe God created the world and how they talk to God in prayer and learn about Him through going to church. They also looked at how Jesus has been represented in art, TV and films.

We had a fun experiment to do in science this week. We had some raisins and put them in water to see what happened. We found out that when raisins are put into still water, they just sink to the bottom. When they are put into sparkling water, they sink to the bottom at first, but then begin to rise and fall like they are bobbing!

It was all about friendship in our PSHE lessons. We thought about what makes a good friend and how we can be a good friend to others. We realise that we all need friends to do things with and to help us feel happy.

We have been discussing E-safety in computing and ensuring that the children all know what to do if they have a problem on line. They each thought about the adults that they could talk to at home and in school if they had a problem on line.

It has been our ‘fundamentals’ lessons in PE this week. We have been thinking about how to make our bodies move at different speeds and how to travel safely around a space in different ways. We played various games to help us work in pairs and move in a variety of ways around the space.
