KS1 – Newsletter – 3.7.26
Thank you to everyone who made it to our re-arranged sports day. Thankfully it was a lot cooler than last week and the children were amazing participating in their races and field events.
We have been news reporters this week in English! We have all written new reports with presenters in the studio and reporters out and about, telling everyone about how Helen Sharman won a competition to be the first British Woman in orbit and what she had to do to prepare and about her time on the Mir Space Station. We then filmed the report in groups and gathered together with the rest of Key Stage One, to watch all the reports we had recorded.
In Maths, Year One have been learning about time. They looked at what things we could do in seconds, minutes and hours, before beginning to use clocks. They learned about the hour and minute hand and how to read o’clock and half past on an analogue clock. One group in Year Two have been learning about position and directions, using clockwise and anticlockwise. They have been guiding each other and Beebots around, thinking about how many turns they need to make and in what direction.
We have continued to learn about food chains in science. We know that the producer is always at the start of the food chain and is some form of plant matter. The children created food chains in a variety of ways including making paper chains of their food chains. They made chains of animals in the African savannah, in British woodlands and in the sea.
It’s been all about map work in geography this week. The children created a dog agility course, along with a key and instructions of where the dog should travel. They also read the story of Little Red Riding Hood and drew The children were finding countries that are taking part in the world cup in Atlases and labelling them on a map.
Forest Schools was a reflective time. The children made memory sticks, talking about the different things they have done and enjoyed over the course of the year. They also enjoyed exploring the forest school area swings, sand pit and digging areas, along with den building space stations.
In RE, we continued to learn about prayer. This week we focused on how Christians pray. We learned that they can pray anywhere at any time. We looked at the different positions people may put their hands or bodies in to pray or the fact that they may use candles or hand crosses to help them focus. We heard a story from the Bible about a man called Daniel who continued to pray to his God, even when he was told he wasn’t allowed to.
Next week, the children will be going to their new classes to meet their new teacher and explore their new classroom.
