KS1 – Newsletter – 4.7.25

Firstly, we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who came to the fair last Saturday and made it a huge success. It was amazing to see so many of you there and we hope you all had great fun.

We continued working from the book ‘Dear Greenpeace’ this week in English. We wrote and published our own adventure stories about a whale turning up in a pond in our characters garden. Year One have been specifically focusing on their spellings, while Year Two were practising doing their joined up handwriting. In Phonics, Year One were practising adding the prefix un- to the beginnings of words and Year Two were adding dis- to the beginnings. They focused on what the prefix does to the root word.

In Maths, Year One have continued to work on time. This week, they were learning how to read an analogue clock. They learned about the big hand being for the minutes and the short hand being for the hours. They began to tell the time to o’clock and half past the hour. Year Two have been working on position and direction. They had great fun creating maps with blocks and other resources and directed each other’s animals left and right around the map. They used a whole variety of positional language to describe where things were on the map.

In Geography we created a concept map of all the things that we have been learning about over the half term. The children were able to recall lots of facts about the seaside and were able to identify features from the seaside that are physical or human features.

We had a great time raising our voices again in forest schools, singing songs around the outdoor classroom. It was then time for some tree gazing. We led on the floor looking up to the trees spotting patterns and pictures we could see. We then used the natural materials we could find around to create animal pictures.

We enjoyed ‘Now Press Play’ in Science, completing a round up of what we have been learning about plants over the last half term. The story reinforced the understanding that plants need light AND water to grow strong and healthy.

Year One were looking at mosques in RE. They were looking at the features of the buildings, how they often have domed rooves and the sign of the crescent moon and star. They also looked at some of the features they may see inside, such as the mihrab, minbar, prayer room, washroom etc… Year Two have been doing a round up of all the topics they have been learning about in RE over the last two years. They had great fun working in groups to complete Kahoot quizzes about each one.

We had more sports day style fun in PE this week, practising races, where we ran, hurdled and balanced bean bags and eggs on spoons! The other PE lesson was all about stretching. This is a controlled way of moving, stretching all parts of our bodies, helping with toning muscles and moving blood around the body.

For PSHE, Year One continued to think about what makes Britain great and why they are proud to be British. Year Two were thinking about uncomfortable feelings like being embarrassed, shy or angry. They discussed how these feelings are not wrong, but how they can have an outlet for these feelings.

Class One have bid a sad farewell today to Miss Driscoll who has been a fantastic student teacher with them this year. The children have really enjoyed having her with them and we wish her good luck for the future!
