KS1 – Newsletter – 5.6.26

Welcome back! We hope that you have all had a fantastic week in the sun, what a treat that was!

We began reading the story of ‘Beegu’ in English and discussed what happened when she came to Earth. We made our own plasticine Beegu’s, thinking about all the features. We had lots of sentences from the story, which were cut up and we had to put them back into order so that they made sense. We then used pictures from the story and wrote our own sentences about what happened in the story. Year One have also been practising all their phonic knowledge, ready for our ‘special quiz’ next week. They have been playing games and a variety of activities to spot the digraphs and recognise real and alien words. Please keep practising at home to give them confidence.

In Maths, Year One began looking at fractions This week, they focused on halves. They identified a half of different shapes and noticed that they need cutting into two equal pieces. They also found a half of different quantities by sharing them out fairly into two groups. One group in Year Two have been making and recognising fractions. They have been looking at arrays and identifying groups showing a half, a quarter and a third. The other group have begun working on statistics. They have been using a variety of tables and graphs to record and read different data.

We have continued to think about habitats in science and what makes a good habitat for different plants and animals. We noted how some environments are hot/ cold, large/ small, dry/damp etc… We made jigsaws of these environments and sorted animals and plants into the habitats where they would live.

In geography, we have been looking at aerial photographs and understanding where they have been taken from. We had different activities, to sort photographs into ones that are aerial and ones that are not, a quiz for us to identify human and physical features and we created our own key for identifying different features on an aerial photograph.

We had a simple introduction to Tim Peake for our history lesson. We gained an initial understanding of who he is and why he is famous. We learned about how he had to learn Russian to work on the International Space Station and how he stayed there for six months. We also heard the fact that he is still alive which the children seemed shocked about!!

We began to explore what it means to pray in RE. We learned about how lots of different faiths pray to their god, which means talking and listening to god. They heard how people pray to say thank you, to say sorry, to ask for help and to worship God.

It was a bit of a cold, wet forest schools day, but we still had great fun! We moved around different activities, painting our clay pots, practising our whittling skills and also creating space adventures with dens and making our own space foods.

In PE, we have been working on athletic skills. We have been thinking about how to make our running skills faster and better. We observed our partner running and gave them some positives about what they did well and then something we thought they could improve on eg higher knees, pumping arms, looking straight forward. We then tried different activities chasing our partner, to see if we could move faster to catch them! We also enjoyed a ‘Boogie Bounce’ session for each class.

We were learning all about perseverance and resilience in PSHE. We thought about how we can work well as part of a team and how things can work better when we do. We completed some challenges to see how well we worked as a team and then discussed what went well and how we could improve if we were to do a similar challenge again.

It is the trip to Cannon Hall farm on Monday. The children must be in their PE kit, with sensible outerwear and footwear, depending on the weather. They need to bring a packed lunch in a bag that they are able to carry around for the day.

Dates for your diary.
