KS1 – Newsletter – 6.3.26
What a great week we have had in Key Stage One. We have continued with our new provision afternoons and had a variety of other celebrations to focus on too.
In English, we continued reading Meerkat mail and working from it. The children have used pictures from the story to think of sentences. They wrote these sentences in their books. We have continued to have a specific focus on handwriting.
In Maths, Year One have begun work on measure. One group have been learning about length and measuring using non standard measures such as blocks and standard measures using centimetres with rulers. The other group have been learning about weight. They have been using balancing scales to observe which items are heavier and lighter than others. They have also weighed how heavy items are using cubes. In Year Two, one group have been answering multiplication questions, using arrays to help them when necessary. In Year Two, one group began to look at multiplication. They began by looking at repeated addition and they started to make some simple arrays using practical resources. The other group have continued with their learning of multiples, completing questions hidden around the room and in games.
It has been all about categorising animals in science. The children listened to a ‘Now Press Play’ story, looking after animals and putting them with other animals in an appropriate environment eg tanks for fish, ponds for amphibians etc.. They completed different tasks drawing and sorting animals into different categories eg has wings, can live under water etc…
The children have been looking at Africa and England and comparing them this week, but also looking at compasses. They have learned about how and why we use compasses and what the compass points are. They used this knowledge to guide an animal around an African map, specifically saying how to get from A to B using compass directions.
We have had the opportunity to learn about and celebrate a bit of Chinese New Year this week. We had the opportunity to design and colour Chinese dragons and masks, after listening to the story of the animals in the race and then learnt about the significance of red envelopes and gifts.
In PSHE, the children have been thinking about strong emotions and what they are. They have thought about what things could make them feel really sad and what they could do in those situations. We read the story of ‘Beegu’ and thought about what happened and the different emotions Beegu felt and why.
We had a fantastic day on Thursday for World Book Day. It was lovely to see all the creative costumes the children came in and hear about what books they enjoy reading. We had a Poet in school who told us a great story in the assembly in the morning. We had fun throughout the day completing activities linked to ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ book that the KS1 staff had dressed up as. We would like to say a huge thank you to Dawud’s Mum, Daniel’s Dad and Monty’s Mum for coming in to school to be our mystery reader to finish off the day.
We have been learning all about Ramadan in RE and how it is one of the five pillars of Islam. We have heard from people in our class who’s families are observing Ramadan and how people choose to fast during daylight hours. We also learned about how they read the Qu’ran more, pray more and choose to do good deeds. We also learned that Ramadan lasts for 40 days and there’s one special night when prayers and reading the Qu’ran earn people extra rewards.
We continued with invasion games in PE. This week the children were focusing on how to mark a partner and how to move to be able to get away from being marked. We played ‘piggy in the middle’ type games, to help the children to think about where to stand and how to move.
