KS1 – Newsletter – 6.6.25

We hope that everyone had a great week off school. One half term left this year, how time flies!

IMPORTANT: The Bridlington trip is on Monday. We will be leaving school promptly at 9am. Please ensure your child is wearing suitable clothing and footwear (Does not need to be school uniform). Check the weather to see if your child will need sun cream or a raincoat – we are outside all day! They will need a packed lunch. Buckets and spades are optional, but remember, your child must be able to carry everything they bring with them. We will be returning to school hopefully around 4.15 – 4.30 depending on the traffic.

To get us excited and ready for heading off to Bridlington, we have been doing lots of talking and writing sentences about the seaside in English. We have been trying to use appropriate vocabulary both in speech and writing and thinking about how we can up level sentences using more creative words or adding adjectives. Year One have been focusing on the /ore/ for more sound in phonics and looking at how to apply all their phonic knowledge to real and alien words ready for our ‘quiz’ next week. Year Two, were focusing on the /wo/ sound in words like wobble and squabble.

Geography has also followed on from this as we have been looking at the features of a seaside resort. They have been researching online to have a look at what things they might see at the coast. They have been looking out for the human and physical features and what is different to the ones they might see around Cookridge.

In Maths, Year One have begun to look at fractions. This week they focused on identifying and showing a half. They did this on shapes, objects and with amounts of things. One group in Year Two have been looking at statistics. They have been using different kinds of tables and graphs to read and record information. The other group have begun to do work on time. They have been recapping reading and making a clock show o’clock and half past.

After learning lots about plants last half term, this half term we are planting our own and making observations. This week, we set up two experiments. One with cress, where we have simply put it on cotton wool and we are ging to observe how quickly it grows. The other is using beans. We have put them again on cotton wool, but we are going to observe which things are most important for them to grow. Therefore, we have placed one in the sunlight and watered it. One in the sunlight but we have not watered it. One is in the dark with water and one is in the dark without water.

We have become frog like in PE, learning how to jump effectively. Thinking about the starting position, how to bend our legs, swing our arms and move forwards. We have also been practising racquet skills, knowing where to position a racquet to return a ball and how to hold it to serve the ball.

We read the story of the Gruffalo in computing. We talked about what would need to be included on a story board about the Gruffalo – Simple sentences to show what’s happened with a picture. We then logged onto to Purple Mash and the program 2createstory. Working with a partner, we began to plan a story board for the story.

We have been thinking about belonging with Year One in RE this week. We discussed all the different places and ways that we might belong. Eg. in our school, class, team point group etc.. but also in groups such as Rainbows, sports teams…. Year Two have begun thinking about prayer. They have learnt about what prayer is and who might pray. They also began to think about why people might pray.

Mindmate was the focus of our PSHE lessons this week. Year One were thinking about what things they find difficult and what they could do to ensure they don’t give up and practise resilience. Year Two were thinking about what makes a great team and how what they could do to be a good member of a team. Both Year groups then completed challenges to help them to practise their perseverance and team building skills.
