KS1 – Newsletter – 7.11.25

What a fantastic first week back we have had in Key Stage One, the break clearly did everyone good, although they all look tired now it’s the end of the week!

We have continued using the book ‘The Bog Baby’, in English as our stimulus. We have looking at different sentences and deciding whether they need question marks, exclamation marks or a full stop and why. They have also been writing their own sentences and including the correct punctuation.

In Year One, the children have been learning about and identifying parts and wholes. They have done a variety of practical tasks to identify the parts and wholes and have begun to look at simple fact families. In Year Two, one group have been practising their column addition skills with carrying.

On Tuesday, we all stepped out of the school ground to go on a local walk. We observed what kind of buildings are in our local area and why. We noticed that the most common buildings were houses and other buildings were amenities that we need like doctors, shops and schools as well as fun places to go like Holt Park Active.

We have started to look at materials in science. We have been looking at the various things in our classroom and thinking about what materials they are made out of. We then used a grid to categorise different objects into groups of what they are made from.

We had lots of fun during forest schools having a bonfire and talking about fire and firework safety. We created bonfire pictures and spent time having fun in the forest schools area and visiting the goats. We also had a session listening to the story of Guy Fawkes and the reason we have bonfire night, using ‘Now Press Play.’

In RE, we began to think about how babies are welcomed into society, what gifts are given and the fact that people go to visit them and take photos. We looked at how in some religions the naming of the baby is very significant and how all names have meaning. We then looked at what each of our names mean.

In Computing, we learnt the term algorithm. We did a practical lesson, beginning to be robots with blindfolds and having to do exactly what we were told by our partners. We each guided our friends around obstacles, telling them to take 3 steps forwards, or 2 steps to the right, to ensure we were guided safely where we needed to go.

We have been completing Mindmate lessons in PSHE this week. We have been thinking about how our words and actions can affect other people and how their words and actions can affect us. We have also looked at how we can ‘follow the crowd’ in positive or negative ways.
