KS1 – Newsletter – KS1
We hope that you all enjoyed the long weekend and the lovely weather we have been having!
We have a new book in English this week called ‘The lighthouse keeper’s lunch’. The children have enjoyed learning about each of the characters in the story and making finger puppets of them. They have all been learning a new skill of editing. They have been reading through sentences and spotting mistakes. They have used a checklist of things to look out for and have used this to be the teacher and correct/ improve the sentences. In phonics, Year One’s focus sounds were /are/ for spare and /ear/ for pear. Year Two were focusing on /zh/ for pleasure.
Year One have been looking at equal and unequal groups in maths this week. They thought about how groups need to be equal to count in 2’s, 5’s, 10’s etc… They then began to recognise and use repeated addition for solving pictoral and word problems. One group in Year Two have begun to find fractions of a shape. They began with finding a half and solved some word problems. The other group have been practising sharing amounts. They used counters and cubes to share different amounts and see if they could be shared into halves, quarters and thirds and to see how much of each group made a half etc..
We were looking at plants again in Science. We drew our own plant and labelled the different parts. We tried to remember what job each part of the plant has.
In Design technology, the children have begun to make their puppets. They have used a template, to draw around on the felt and cut it out. They then began to sew two pieces of felt together.
In RE, Year One were reading a story from the Christian faith about The Good Samaritan. They talked about how each of the characters behaved and whether they thought they behaved well or not and why. They then acted out the story. In Year Two, the children continued looking at rules within religions and focused on The Five Pillars of Islam. They learnt about what each one is and why they were important for Muslims to follow them.
Year One have begun to listen to the Carnival of the animals. This week they looked at the lions and the swans. They have been identifying features within the music and creating movements to go with it. Year Two have been making compositions on Purple Mash. They have been creating their own accompaniment to ‘Twinkl Twinkl little star’.
In Art, the children began learning about a Cornish artist called Alfred Wallis. He created pictures of ships using all kinds of random items such as cardboard and house paints. The children had a go at creating similar styles of art work, again using different household things like cardboard.
We have been enjoying our alternative PE lessons this week. It was fast and furious with games of table hockey, bench ball and boccia.
Year Two were thinking about their feelings in PSHE. They looked at lots of different scenarios and realised that different people might feel differently. For example some people were excited to go on stage and others were nervous or embarrassed. Also, some situations might make us feel two opposing emotions eg moving house could make people feel sad but also excited.
We’d like to say a huge congratulations to Franklin, who won the design a rabbit competition at Bolton Abbey. His design will be made into a rabbit for next year’s hunt. We hope you might all be able to go along to find it!
